God Moves In A Mysterious Way

God Moves In A Mysterious Way

"I have always been attracted to the text of this hymn, but certain seasons of life have forced me to reckon with the words. The chorus that I added is a feeble attempt to paint the awesome and terrible silence we often encounter in seasons suffering, where we are given no explanations, but only God. Only God....who "is His own interpreter" of our inexplicable circumstance....who is Himself the Answer." (Matt Papa)

VERSE 1
God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform
He plants his footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm
Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never failing skill
He treasures up his bright designs
And works his sovereign will

VERSE 2
Judge not the Lord by feeble sense
But trust him for his grace
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face
You fearful saints, fresh courage take
The clouds you so much dread
Are big with mercy and shall break
In blessings on your head

CHORUS
Holy, holy, O mysteries beyond
Glory, glory be to our sovereign God

VERSE 3
Blind unbelief is sure to err
And scan his work in vain
God is his own interpreter
And he will make it plain
His purposes will ripen fast
Unfolding every hour
The bud may have a bitter taste
But sweet will be the flower
